Specialist Equipment

There is a sentence we hear regularly that explains this entire article, another plumber said it was too blocked. Drains do not have a too blocked setting, but equipment does, and the difference between a drain that gets cleared and a drain that gets declared impossible is very often sitting in the truck, or not. We have spent 25 years and more than 20,000 drains building our kit around one principle, arrive able to finish the job, and this is a tour of what that means, what each piece of equipment actually does, and why it matters to the person whose drain is blocked.

CCTV drain cameras, the end of guessing

The camera changed drainage more than any other tool. A drain camera travels the line and shows, in real time and in colour, exactly what is happening inside, the blockage and its composition, roots and their entry points, cracks, displaced joints, sags holding water, and the honest condition of the pipe itself. Before cameras, diagnosis was inference and experience. With them, it is evidence, and evidence changes everything downstream, the clearing method gets chosen to suit the actual pipe, repairs get quoted from footage rather than speculation, and the client watches the same screen we do. Every serious decision in modern drainage begins with the camera, which is why ours go down first, not last.

High pressure water jetting, the finisher

Jetting is the tool that resolves what other methods relocate. A dedicated jetting unit drives water at very high pressure through a hose to interchangeable nozzles, forward jets cutting into the obstruction, rear jets scouring the pipe wall and flushing every fragment out of the line. The result is not a hole through the blockage but a pipe cleaned around its full circumference along its full length, which is the difference between relief and reset, and it is why jetted drains stay clear where snaked drains reoffend. The nozzle library is the quiet depth here, penetrating heads for grease, cutting heads for roots, flushing heads for the sand that Perth soil feeds into any damaged line, each matched to what the camera found. Pressure is fully adjustable, which matters just as much, because the fragile clay under an older suburb and a modern PVC line deserve very different treatment.

Locators, so nothing is dug on faith

A camera can find a fault, but repairs happen in the ground, and the locator is the bridge. Working with a transmitting sonde on the camera head, electronic locators pinpoint the exact position and depth of any point in the line from the surface, which means when excavation genuinely is required, it is one precise hole over the actual fault rather than a trench dug on estimation. The same equipment traces pipe routes for renovation planning, pool builds and landscaping, answering the question every project should ask before machinery arrives, where exactly do the drains run.

Relining systems, repair without excavation

The newest wing of the kit is the one that ends problems permanently. Pipe relining equipment installs a resin saturated liner inside a damaged pipe and cures it in place, creating a seamless structural pipe within the old one, sealing cracks and, crucially, the joints that roots exploited, all from existing access points with no digging. For the jointed clay sewers under established Perth, relining converted the most stubborn recurring problem in drainage, seasonal root intrusion, into something fixable in a day with the garden intact. Between full length lining and patch repairs for localised damage, most of what once required excavation now does not.

The eels, the specialists and the judgement

The kit also keeps its traditionalists, mechanical eels and augers for specific hard obstructions and delicate situations where they remain the right call, and an assortment of purpose tools accumulated across two decades of unusual jobs. Which brings up the honest point about all of this, equipment is half the difference, judgement is the other half. Knowing which tool, at what pressure, in which order, based on what the camera shows, is what 25 years actually buys, and it is why the gear and the experience are a package rather than a shopping list.

What it means when you call

For the person with the blocked drain, all of this compresses into three practical promises. We arrive able to see the problem, able to finish the job on the spot in the vast majority of cases, and able to fix causes rather than symptoms when the footage says so. It is why other plumbers hand us their hardest drains, and why our guarantee is safe to make, if we cannot clear your drain, it is free. If someone has told you your drain is too blocked, or you would simply rather start with the crew that finishes, call Drains Plus, 24 hours across Perth, equipment on board.

The kit also stays current, because the technology has not stopped moving. Camera resolution, locator accuracy and liner materials all improve year on year, and equipment that was leading a decade ago is midfield now. Part of specialising in drains, rather than carrying drain gear alongside everything else, is that the investment case for staying at the front of the equipment curve always stacks up, the tools earn their keep daily instead of waiting in a rack for the occasional blockage. Our clients feel that as capability, whatever the drain, the answer on the truck is current.
